The LWF/WS Regional Finance Workshop
ELCSA-DS was host to the LWF-WS Africa Regional Finance Workshop, held from the 3rd to 7th of June 2002. A total of forty-three finance staff from all WS Programmes in Africa met to share experiences and learn more about the financial reporting requirement of WS. Some participants had the opportunity to visit ELCSA-DS projects in the Limpopo Province.
ELCSA-DS hosted a three-day Sphere Regional ACT and SALDARN training workshop, on the 18-20 June 2002. Twelve participants attended the workshop from ACT local partners and 14 from SALDARN members. At the workshop, an overview of Sphere Project was presented, its rights-based approach was discussed and the concepts of Standards and Indicators were also clarified. Disaster preparedness was discussed and an action plan for further training in the countries represented was drafted.
LWF Global Consultation on Diakonia
In
collaboration with the other LWF member churches in the Johannesburg area,
ELCSA-DS was actively involved in making local preparations for the LWF Global
Consultation on Diakonia, held at the Kempton Park Conference Centre, 3-7
November. As part of the programme, and with the view that participants need
to understand the issues of poverty, violence and HIV/AIDS, delegates were
taken on field visits to different locations in South Africa. One group, that
also included the Director of LWF-WS, visited the ELCSA-DS activities in the
Limpopo Province.
Inter-Faith Peace Summit for Africa
Between
14 and 19 October 2002, LWF organized a landmark Inter-Faith Peace Summit
in Benoni-Johannesburg. There were prominent religious leaders of major faiths
from all parts of the African continent. The Summit was the culmination of
months of preparations in which ELCSA-DS, too, participated as the Secretariat
of the National Steering Committee under the auspices of the National Religious
Leaders Forum of South Africa. The week-long summit was opened by H.E. Mr
Jacob Zuma, Deputy President of South Africa and ended with the adoption of
The Johannesburg Inter-Faith Peace Declaration and the Plan of Action, authorizing
the establishment of a Continuation Committee and calling upon the religious
leaders to take "immediate" actions in regard to conflicts.
